How to Declutter Your Home before Selling

Decluttering is one of the things that you will need to do before a sale. An organized home has a better chance of selling than a home with clutter. Declutter so the buyers can see your house and not your clutter. The more space you’re able to show the more you’ll be able to sell.

It is important to show your home’s space, afterall it is what buyers are paying for. A decluttered home also gives an impression that the house is well cared for.

Here are useful tips on how to declutter your home before a sale.

  1. Have a plan. Plot a strategy on where will you begin decluttering. Don’t try to declutter the entire house on a weekend. Pick a room or an area and make a start. You can do this a few months before you put your house on the market.
  2. Sort things into three categories – things moving with you, things to donate, and things you can leave behind. Most of people are pack rats and you’ll find stuff overflowing in every nook and cranny of a house. If you don’t need them anymore, why not donate them? Or you could have a garage sale and sell the stuffs that are still in great condition but you no longer need.
  3. Create space in your rooms. Take away the things you don’t use every day. Let the buyers see the counter tops, your fridge, the walls. Don’t hide the clutter in the cupboards or cabinet. Buyers also look into that. Take everything off your fridge. Any personal items like photos, magnets, sticky notes, and items on top of the fridge should be cleared. Stow away personal care products under the counter or in a little basket in the closet in your bathroom. Store items you don’t use in your living room and bedroom. Keep only the things that are useful, meaningful or beautiful. The more space you’re able to show the better.
  4. Return rooms to their intended use. Over time you may have overloaded your rooms with items, furnishings and things that have lost its original purpose, like a media room doubling up as an exercise room. If your rooms have identity crises, buyers may see it as the house not well laid out. Return the rooms to their original use and your house becomes more organized.
  5. Depersonalize. Keep this in mind, you want your buyers to visualize themselves in your house. Personal items only serve to distract buyers. You don’t want them looking at your photos, they should be focusing on the details of your home. Put away your photographs, souvenirs, religious items, certificates and other personal artifacts.
  6. Ask for help. You don’t have to do the job alone, family members or friends can help to make the process less frustrating and time consuming.

What Our Clients Are Saying…

"My husband and I met with Michael in mid-December, our house went on the market January 16th and was under contract January 19th. Michael and his team are amazing at what they do and did everything could to help us. We were out of our old house and in to the new one within a month of our house going under contract. I would highly recommend using the J. Michael Manley team for buying and/or selling. They made the hassle or buying and selling so easy and everything was very smooth."
