How to Get Rid of Home Odors

When selling your home, it doesn’t only have to look good, it also has to smell better. You don’t want your potential buyers running out of your house because it stinks.

If you have lived in that house for a very long time, you may fail to notice something is not pleasant because you have already gotten used to the odor. How to know if your house has that lingering odor? The best way is to ask a friend or someone who doesn’t live there to do a sniff-test. The best smell is no smell.

Pets, tobacco or cigarettes, pungent food, mildew – they all make your house smell bad. Use these tips to get rid of home odors and create a fresh smelling house that would create a good impression to your potential buyers.

  1. Cigarette smoke can cling to your furnishings, carpets, and drapes. To get rid of the smell, you could hire a professional to steam-clean your carpets and upholstery.
  2. Pet’s smell can be tough to get rid of. If you are selling your home, try to find a temporary house for your pets, otherwise you have to clean more often. To get rid of smell, first thing you need to do is clean their habitat and open the windows to air out the house. If the smell still lingers, you can steam-clean your carpets and upholstery.
  3. Musty odors caused by mildew could be a big turnoff. To get rid of the odor, find the source. If is a furniture or carpeting, you might consider replacing them. Ventilate the area or object for at least 24 hours. Install a dehumidifier if your environment is naturally damp. Scrub away the mold and mildew odors from non-fabric materials such as tiles or tub.
  4. Avoid cooking food with strong smell from fish, curry, garlic and other pungent food. It may smell so good on the dinner table but the smell lingers. To minimize pungent cooking odors, ventilate, open the windows, and set a fan pointing out the window to push odors outside. Close bedrooms while cooking and clean up after you cook.

What Our Clients Are Saying…

"My husband and I met with Michael in mid-December, our house went on the market January 16th and was under contract January 19th. Michael and his team are amazing at what they do and did everything could to help us. We were out of our old house and in to the new one within a month of our house going under contract. I would highly recommend using the J. Michael Manley team for buying and/or selling. They made the hassle or buying and selling so easy and everything was very smooth."
